Why its so hard to find 34x36 pants

Its all about the numbers guys. Stature chart.

95% of boys at the age of 20 years old are under 6 ft. 2 inches (74 inches). So, assuming that we don't grow any taller after 20 years old, which I believe is true, the height number holds up for adult males as well (though the weight numbers certainly do not).

Assuming that those 6 ft 3 to 6 ft 5 can wear a 36 inch length pants, that may be only about 2% of the population (since there are likely equal numbers at the bottom of the chart) . Then you take that 2% remaining and try to determine how many of those have 34 inch waist. With our overweight population I am sure that you can say that at least 1/2 of those are above a 34 inch waist. And on top of that there must be a number of teens and others that have less than a 34 inch waist. You are then left with about 0.5% of the male population at my guess, and that might be generous.

So if you are a retailer and have limited shelf space or $$ for online inventory, what would you do? I am just thankful for those that even offer 34x36 and I hope that our collective online numbers can be a market that will justify some focus and expanded options.

J. CREW has 34x36 Tall Pants - Chinos and dress pants (online store only)

Nice to see that the folks at J. CREW have an entire section for Tall Men only. Not just tall AND big, but tall. Sites like these are hard to find. The tall dress pants are on the expensive side. Wish I could comment on the quality but I don't have any. 3 different types of Chinos all priced at $59-$65 34x36 dress pants range from  $158 to $225. My guess is that they are pretty high quality. Will try to get hold of some and let you know. (Prices reflect 25-Nov-13).

Muldoon's carries Sevane 34x36 dress pants

34x36 Jeans, updated May, 2023

Grand River Classic Jeans, 34x36, $62 to $73

Old Navy, a brick and mortar with 34x36 pants - but...

OK, I have to give some love to OLD NAVY, they are one of the VERY few stores that I can walk into and buy 34x36 pants right off the shelf. We are talking Khakis here, but hey, that is still pretty great when compared to most other stores that I have walked into. Be warned however, not all Old Navy stores I've walked into have 34x36, but your chances are "good" at least.

Also, their prices are right. I don't feel like I am being discriminated against because I am tall.

Best, most comfortable 34x36 dress pants in warm weather

I think that I have narrowed things down quite a bit now. Lands End Washable Year-Round Wool Trousers, Hidden Comfort Waist are the best, most comfortable 34x36 dress pants for warm weather that I have found. Price check in Nov. 2013 has these at $89. I find myself preferring to wear them all the time. It must be a guy thing. When I find something comfortable I wear it a lot, not as much at the office (only because I can't get away with it) but at home I might change into the same shorts and t-shirt for an entire week. I have two of the Land End "Year-Round" pants, though I am really down to just one now since one shared the drier with some gum and are not quite the same :-( Since I am living in the South, Houston Texas, to be exact, most of the year we are warm and muggy. If I could get away with wearing shorts to work I would!

In cold or cooler weather I am happy to wear the heavier pants, and I am sure that my northern cousins would insist on it since my favorite "Year-Round" pants are very thin and won't protect you much from cold air. Both Lands' End and L.L. Bean seem to have equally nice pants for colder weather, and since each has stores concentrated in the North I am not surprised. Lands' End primarily in the Northeast with only a few stores in Southern California, Georgia, North and South Carolina and Florida. L.L Bean has even fewer stores with nothing in the South.

And don't be afraid of the "wool" material. The Lands End wool pants are extremely comfortable.

The comfort waist expands a bit and gives you some flexibility, especially nice since not all 34 waist pants fit the same. Some of my 34 waist pants are too tight and I am keeping them around with the hope that I might lose a few pounds.

If you would like to be kept informed about what I've found or about sales on 34x36 pants please email me at 34x36pants + and I will add you to a distribution list. And/or follow 34x36pants on twitter.

Note: I corrected this post in Nov. 2013 since L.L. Bean no longer carried the wool dress pant.

Land's End looks promising, large selection of 34x36 / Tall Pants.

Along with LL Bean, Land's End is a great place to hunt for 34x36 or what I see being called "Tall" pants. We are not Big & Tall we are just Tall.

Note, if you prefer, sells Land's End as well. And the prices look cheaper! Good luck! Let me know of you find any of the pants to be exceptional. If I get a hold of any I will let you know.

Tall Sweatpants

Sweatpants tall sizes, finally
Note: Links updated November 2011

Looking for tall mens sweatpants has to be one of the most difficult tasks for finding tall mens clothes. Most all pants are hard to find but sweatpants are the absolute worst. Once again, retailers disappoint. Below are a few that I have found, please add to the comments section if you find others.

Eddie Bauer Tall Sweatpants
Sweats (long fleece cargos), tall size
Link ($64, last checked Nov 26, 2011). Look pretty cool. Other blogs say that these run large, so "M" should be fine.
These are about a 36" inseam, fantastic, own a pair.

LL Bean Tall Sweatpants
Athletic Sweats, Pants
(All includes Med. and Large waist sizes!)
NOTE: These are not actually all that "tall", about 34" maybe 33" inseam

Lands End Tall Sweatpants
Sweats, tall sizes - Link1, Link2   ($44, last checked Nov 26, 2011)
NOTE: These are not actually all that "tall", about 34" maybe 33" inseam

Under Armour, have new large/tall Sweatpants
Just sent Under Armour an email about there plans for tall sweat pants. With all of the athletes wearing their apparel, surely they are making tall sweat pants. Under Armour, how about some tall sweat pants for the masses? I know that you guys could sell them.

Newsflash: Under Armour ponies up with one, only, still very disappointed but at least they show up.
Sweat pants - Link ($49, last checked Nov 26, 2011)
Be sure to look for (LDT = large tall) About time UA! Still disappointed with the sparse selection given that these guys cadre to athletes. Surely they could stock more tall sizes. Are all basketball players under 6'3" inches?
